Inspirational Historical Romance.
There, I said it. It’s out there. I’m writing Inspirational Historical Romance. It’s a genre that causes my staunch Presbyterian Blue-Stocking father to ask me to repeat it again. “What’s that you’re writing?” he croaks with eyes lit below eyebrows thrusting to his hairline.
It’s not the Inspirational or Historical that gets to him. It’s the Romance part. Yeah, I know. But just like that advertisement that heralds the Oldsmobile as not being our parent’s Oldsmobile, today’s romance isn’t ‘our mother’s romance.’
Today there are multiple romance genres to meet every reader’s expectations. You can share an Inspirational or Inspirational Historical with your 80-year old mother or your 12-year old child and not worry about the content. They are sweet stories with no questionable surprises.
Inspirational books contain flawed characters who struggle with conflicts. They strive to make a good life for their family. They respect their neighbors and community, and grow in their relationships, especially with God. The religion here isn’t preachy or blatant. Sometimes there will be a scripture quote, but it’s in the context of the character’s journey. Who knows, those quotes might come in handy someday. After all, aren’t we all on a similar journey?
